Meriden Cyclist Memorial Service

September 5

It should be pointed out that as well as CTC Coventry’s 100th birthday there is another 100th anniversary to celebrate and commemorate in 2021.

2021 is also 100 years since the first Cyclists’ Memorial Service on Meriden Green.

It is not however the 100th service as sadly due to the pandemic last years ‘normal’ service had to be cancelled, Lynda Lilley who was Vicar at the time produced an excellent ‘virtual’ service. We believe that several years during World War 2 there was in fact no formal service, although it is said that cyclists’ still gathered informally.

This year the service will be shared by local clergy, possibly the Dean of Coventry or the Bishop of Warwick and the Senior Army Chaplain.

The Cyclists’ Memorial Service commemorates all cyclists’ lost in conflict. This is a national event which this year will be supported by cyclists’ from the forces and will also feature a display of vintage cycles.
