INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2025
Saturday, 8th March 2025
The Theme of International Women’s Day 2025 is “Accelerate Action for Women’s Equality”
This year, for our recognition of International Women’s Day, we intend to celebrate the achievements and influence of George Eliot, one of Warwickshires most famous women on a cycle ride to places which preserve her memory
We, as a club, can certainly claim success over the past few years in promoting and developing the role of women both to operate as equals within the club and to provide distinctive activities for our women members. It is perhaps a good time to reflect upon how that mission should develop in the future.
And what better time to do that on our 26 mile George Eliot themed women’s ride for IWD 2025 (Saturday 8th March), which will take us from her former school, on Warwick Row, Coventry (near Starley Memorial) to Nuneaton and back, including a brief visit to the Museum’s George Eliot Exhibition, her Memorial in Riversley Park, and her sculpture in the town centre, close to the George Eliot pub (with secure bike storage) where we will take a break, before returning via Arbury Hall and Astley Castle and church.
Starting at 9.30 and led by Terry Moles, the route starts at the Starley Memorial in Warwick Row, Coventry. The outward route is along the well surfaced, although occasionally muddy, Coventry and Bedworth Canal towpaths, on slightly busy B roads and through urban areas. The return route skirts Arbury Hall Estate, along Astley Lane and past Corley and back to the Starley Memorial in Coventry via Brownshill Green. Helmets are strongly recommended due to the low bridges along the towpaths.
In planning this tour we have been greatly assisted by the George Eliot Fellowship and one of their members will accompany us for part of the route. We will be taking stops at places along the way which were important in the life and work of George Eliot to learn more about our local literary superstar and her role in promoting women’s equality
We intend to limit the ride to 12 because of the nature of the route and to not restrict the scope for discussion both at stopping points along the way and at the mid-ride pub break where we have booked for 12. If interest is strong we would intend to repeat the ride later in the year.
