Each year there is a Women’s Festival of Cycling which is avidly supported by our club.
This is a report from the 2021 Festival from Marina Friend –
The Women’s Festival of Cycling 2021 was a great success in our Club. It was full of events which proved to be popular with many women riders.
The Festival’s start coincided with the BBQ at Fillongley to celebrate the Club’s Centenary and the Club’s first ride in 1921.
A group of five women rode 20mi to the BBQ in one of the hottest days of the year, ovecoming two punctures along the way.
The Two Cathedrals Challenge Ride, from Coventry to Birmingham, saw 10 women tackle country lanes, canal tow paths and Birmingham traffic. The ride was baced upon a 22-mile route into Birmingham which is part of the Cathedral Relay and Cathedral Cycle Route challenge for Bike Week. This was a return ride of more than 50 miles: a real achievement for some of the women who had never ridden that distance before. It was also a navigational challenge for the ride leaders. 500 miles covered between the riders! “It was a wonderful adventure! All of us thoroughly enjoyed the day!”
There were four short mid-week women’s rides, two of them evening rides, organised to include the beginner riders. 5 new riders took part in them.
The conclusion of the Festival, two rides of different lengths to a joint Celebratory Picnic in Kenilworth, started in persistent rain threatening to spoil the day. However, by the time the 11 riders (some of whom were rather wet) reached the Abbey Fields, the rain had stopped and there was even a watery sun. Savories, fruit and home made cakes were much appreciated during a lively chat and discussions about the Women’s Group achievements.
All together, 24 women took part in two weeks of the Festival.
This includes two women riding a 100mi Club’s Sunday ride and two women who completed the 100km Myton Hospice Charity ride. Congratulations to them!
During the Festival we challenged ourselves, celebrated our achievements, enjoed each others company, independence and freedom of cycling.
